Buildingwise Certifiers is a family-run Private Building Certification practice based in Newcastle NSW, servicing Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens and the broader Hunter region.

Our practice was founded on decades of hands-on construction experience and strengthened by modern systems and expanded commercial expertise. Each Buildingwise Certifiers assessment is grounded in practical, real-world building knowledge.

Peter Moroney

Through his work as a builder and consultant, Peter saw firsthand the delays and uncertainty builders and property owners faced when navigating council approvals. He recognised an opportunity to provide certification services grounded in practical construction knowledge and delivered with a more responsive and informed approach.

Peter began his carpentry apprenticeship in Kempsey NSW in 1980, completing his trade in 1984. He then spent several years working across Queensland and regional New South Wales, gaining practical experience in diverse construction environments, including cyclonic regions in North Queensland.

In 1989, Peter established Buildingwise in the Nambucca Valley. Throughout the 1990s, he operated successful building partnerships delivering projects for clients including the Department of Housing, Aboriginal development organisations and Catholic Education.

In 1997, Peter became accredited through the Housing Industry Association as an Accredited Building Consultant, expanding into pre-purchase inspections, building defects, and advisory work.

After relocating to Newcastle in 2000, Peter continued working as a Building Consultant and continued construction projects for selected clients.

In 2009, he began undertaking critical stage inspections while completing further studies. He was awarded his Diploma of Building Surveying in 2012 and became accredited as a Private Certifier in 2014.

Since then, Peter has approved hundreds of developments and pool certifications across Newcastle and the surrounding regions.

That depth of experience, built across more than four and a half decades, is what sits behind every assessment Peter carries out.

Outside of work, Peter and his wife Jo love re-exploring the region, from drives up through the Hunter Valley and vineyards, to walks around Lambton Park or the local beaches on a quiet and fresh sunny morning. He coaches junior rugby league with Newcastle Wests, and has a long history with local cricket through Adamstown, travelling to grounds across Newcastle and the Hunter every weekend throughout the season. He will tell you cricket is a gentleman’s game, and that some of the best conversations happen over a beer with the opposition afterwards.

Behind every certification, there’s a considerable amount of documentation, correspondence, and coordination involved. Our administration team works through that process every day, managing paperwork, tracking submissions, and helping clients navigate the NSW Planning Portal and other regulatory requirements.

The Planning Portal in particular is a source of genuine frustration for many builders, developers, and property owners. Our team knows it well, and that working knowledge makes a real difference in keeping projects moving.
