Buildingwise Certifiers is currently providing Construction Certificate services for a luxury home build in Merewether, and this week the project also became a team training opportunity.

Commercial lead and certifier Kurt Moroney took a group of staff out to see the pour in progress, including two team members currently building their own careers in the industry: Tahlia, one of our Junior Cadets, and Holly, who is undertaking project management training. It’s part of a standing practice at Buildingwise. As Kurt puts it, admin staff and cadets are regularly taken out to site “to understand the building process as a whole, so when you call up, our whole team knows building.”
A concrete pour is a good one to learn from. Formwork gets filled in stages, and the crew is constantly checking and adjusting as they go, working to a laser level set up away from the action that projects the exact height the slab needs to finish at across the whole site. Once poured, the surface is floated smooth to that same reference. It’s a process built around getting one shot right, which makes it easy to see why the preparation behind it (and the inspections that go with it) matters so much.

There’s also a coordination side to a pour day that has nothing to do with the concrete itself. Traffic control was needed on the street to manage the truck and pump, and the whole day had to be planned around the neighbours and, as always, the weather. None of that sits within a certifier’s own role, but understanding how many moving parts a builder has to line up on a single day is genuinely useful for anyone working alongside them.

The build is being carried out by Hercules Building, a Newcastle and Lake Macquarie company with more than 25 years across custom homes, renovations and fit-outs. The concrete work on the day was handled by Trutek Concreting, led by Managing Director Stuart McDougall, whose crew kept the pour moving cleanly from truck to pump to finished slab.

For Tahlia and Holly, and for the rest of the team who make the trip out to site over time, it’s less about the concrete and more about building a genuine feel for how a project actually comes together on the ground. That understanding matters just as much for the certifiers of the future as it does for the wider building industry in NSW.

Equipping team members with practical safety gear ensures cadet and admin staff can safely participate in site inspections across active Hunter region construction projects.
