The whole town celebrated with flags, a brass band and a children’s tea party, right here in the park. 136 years later, on this exact ground, so can you.
It was the 9th of September 1890, and Lambton had plenty to celebrate. The town was about to switch on the first electric street lighting anywhere in the Newcastle region, years ahead of the Newcastle CBD, and the whole place was en fete, with flags flying in every direction. Lambton Park was where much of the afternoon’s celebrations played out. The old Lambton Council Chambers, still standing today as the Lambton Library, sits front and centre in Ralph Snowball’s photograph, with adults gathered to the right near the park’s well known rotunda and the Lambton Brass Band playing nearby. Look closely to the left of the frame and you’ll spot a smaller, easily missed crowd: children from every school in the municipality, seated at long tables for a festive tea to mark the occasion. After a few speeches, an eager crowd moved towards an elevated spot, where Mrs W. T. Dent, wife of the Mayor, started the machinery that brought Lambton’s streets their first electric light, to loud applause. A banquet in commemoration of the occasion was also held at the Skating Rink, presided over by the Mayor, Mr W. T. Dent.

The café’s name is a direct nod to that night in 1890, when Lambton was flooded with new light for the first time in the region. Its courtyard sits inside the Memorial Gates on Elder Street, dedicated to local men and women who served in World War II, unveiled the same day the building first opened as the Lambton Memorial Baby Health Centre in 1947.

Buildingwise Certifiers issued the Construction Certificate for the site’s transformation into a café and community space, working with the City of Newcastle Council. Lambton Park and its heritage buildings have been looked after by the Council for well over a century, and it shows in how well this ground has stayed part of everyday community life.
